Quite a finish to MMJ's five night run at Terminal 5 in New York. The band played an inspired set of their tunes from Evil Urges. They capped the night with some good time covers and came back out for one my round of OBH. Glad I had the chance to get to NYC for this one.

No secret that we're pretty big My Morning Jacket fans here at Happy Genius Heroes. The band's covers of 'Easy' and 'All Night Long' reignited our interest in Lionel Richie. Following MMJ to New Orleans for Jazz Fest we even got to see THE MAN, Lionel perform (did we mention he was awesome?).
Well last night to close out My Morning Jacket's night performing It Still Moves at Terminal 5 they played it. The setlist (included below) looks unreal and some Lionel to close? Epic.

A little late I know. Better late than never? Fun show. Ran into A LOT of familiar faces. Some good extended jams on some of the more familiar tunes (Gideon). We got to here a song from Carl's new solo album and a new tune that MMJ has been playing lately, 'Circuital'. Always good times with these guys. Riley went on to see them again 8/29 in Pittsburgh. I dunno if any a/v materials made it from that show, but here's a couple more decent pics from Chicago. -JL

This was it. This was the show that got us to New Orleans. 90 minutes of live MMJ. We'd been waiting since the MSG New Year's show to see these guys in concert again. It didn't matter that Simon and Garfunkel were on the other main stage. I can get down with some 'Cecilia' and all that, but no way were we going to miss any of this performance. We made sure we all used the restroom one final time. We stocked up on beverages. Then at about 4:45 we made our way toward the stage to set up shop. We managed to lay claim to a good dry spot near the mud pool that had been created in the front and center area of the Gentilly Stage soundboard and we waited. The anticipatory tension grew as the crowd did the same and when Jim, Tommy, Carl, and Patrick took the stage at 5:32 everyone was peaking. The band went into a building early jam and then right into the familiar riff on their crowd favorite, "One Big Holiday". The place erupted. With only a 90 minute time slot the band ripped through some of their most popular tunes; sticking to material from It Still Moves, Z, and Evil Urges. It was a great time and good to see the band back on stage together. As time got to running short the Preservation Hall Jazz Band joined them on stage. Also joining in the fun was Al "Carnival Time" Johnson who didn't let Jim James be the only one rocking a cape on stage. Of course we wish they could've played longer, but it was a lot of fun and worth the trip to see them. Setlist, more pics, and a video below.

My Morning Jacket w/ Preservation Hall Jazz Band - Move On Up
A friend just tipped me off to this, My Morning Jacket is playing the first weekend of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest. Holy Cow! Didn't take much to get us to pull the trigger on this one. Seeing as Lionel Ritchie will be performing we're all hoping Jim James and him team up to perform 'Easy' or 'All Night Long'. Oh yeh, Pearl Jam will be there weekend #2. It was a toss up and couldn't swing both but we settled on weekend #1, sorry PJ. Just take a look at the talent at this thing....it just goes on and on and on. We all miss the live performances from My Morning Jacket that we were treated to in 2008, but it's good to see our appetites for the vocals of Jim James will be sated with his upcoming release of a tribute album to George Harrison (We've got Monsters of Folk to look forward to as well). The full album will be released July 7th. In the meantime have a listen to one of the tracks below.
We posted on it below, but here is the video preview of Sam Erickson's photo show at the Morrison Hotel Gallery. Have a look. This vid, set to One Big Holiday, reminds me of how f-ing good these guys are live.
We love us some My Morning Jacket and we love us some My Morning Jacket photos. The picture above is from Riley's work at the Chicago Theatre show last December. Pictures like this remind us of the time's we've had at the shows enjoying some keeeeeck ahssss tunes and times. This May 22nd-June 17th the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York will be housing an exhibit from Sam Erickson featuring pictures spanning the rise of My Morning Jacket from 2002 to 2008. You can check out the thumbnails here and read the full description below. I for one will be checking this one out. The Morrison Hotel Presents: STILL MOVING: My Morning Jacket by Sam Erickson featuring 21 of Erickson’s Iconic, Career-Spanning Images of the Band. May 22 through June 17, 2009 Morrison Hotel Gallery 313 Bowery NYC
From 2002 to 2008 photographer and filmmaker Sam Erickson regularly documented My Morning Jacket as they steadily grew into one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of their generation. His efforts resulted in a stunning collection of images from the recording of the band’s last three studio albums: It Still Moves, Z, and Evil Urges, numerous live shots and the making of their CD/DVD Okonokos.
Beginning on May 22nd, the Morrison Hotel Gallery will show 21 of these images for a six-week exhibition. These will be hand-printed, archival shots from the film negatives, and will be available in limited editions. None of the images in the show were commissioned photographs; the majority have never before been viewed by the public. This also marks the first instance the Morrison Hotel Gallery has done a show on a band that is ascending, rather than reflecting on a career.
Erickson was able to spend enough time with My Morning Jacket to build a rapport that allowed him to both chronicle their evolution and shed some light on the elusive group. One can see Erickson’s intuitive grasp on how the band functions as a well as a clear understanding of their visual aesthetic. His many candid shots accomplish the difficult task of capturing the essence that ties together five individuals both on and off the stage.
“Sam is one of the new emerging talents in the music visual media arena. I was impressed with his technical and artistic ability as a photographer. Combined that with Sam’s ability to capture the very talented and critically acclaimed band, My Morning Jacket from early on in their career to present. That appealed to me and I anticipate will appeal to our audience” Peter Blachley, Morrison Hotel Gallery I love the pictures from that show. Kudos Riley. We'll have to post more another time.
In an email to fans today MMJ announced they would be releasing a Live EP from their 8/16/08 show at Louisville, KY's waterfront park. You can read the full message from the band over at The Steam Engine. You should be heading there frequently as they've got all you My Morning Jacket needs covered. Be sure to check out Jim James' interview with Ken Wilber while you're there. James tells much of MMJ's backstory and what it has meant to him. Very cool interview...oh and they've got a ton of good downloads over there too. In the meantime check out the behind the scenes video from the My Morning Jacket EP to be released April 18th. Just watching it reminds me of how keeeeck ace these guys are in concert. Enjoy and be sure to get a copy when it comes out.
We could've given you the usual Valentine's Day list but decided to put a little twist on the the whole thing by compiling our favorite 'puppy dogs and ice cream songs' as performed by My Morning Jacket. Hope you like. Be sure to listen to the alt. lyrics on "Wonderful Tonight" and a fun version of "Blue Moon". Good stuff. Happy listening and Happy Valentine's Day.
My Morning Jacket at Madison Square Garden for New Year's Eve. We had this one booked and circled on the calendar since last summer. Our anticipation and excitement was rewarded with an awesome performance by the gang from Louisville.
MMJ - One Big Holiday 12/31/08 (you may need to login to google to hear stream this. We're still learning. feedback welcome.)
"Have a lot of fun, make a lot of love, spread a lot of joy. It's 2009!" We had fun with the 'black tie' theme the band recommended for the occasion (although we were out shopping the day before the show). I can honestly say that I've never had more fun in formal wear and as the band played for 3+ hours I felt like I got my money's worth ($5.50 @ Salvation Army)out of my double breasted white sport coat.
It was a great night and one I have trouble putting into words so I've attached a few link to let others enjoy the night. Click to see the Setlist.
Giddy up, Giddy up Again! E flew back to NYC bright and early and Im trying to re-hydrate. Late one last night, great show, went to Pint afterwards in Bucktown. Met up with the whole crew, think there were like 30 of us from greater Chi area holding it down, I remember getting off to the side for a minute and talking to someone I didn't know as a refresher. She inquired if I was at the bar alone or if I came with friends, I looked around, and didn't want to sound like a dick but she was the only person I didnt know. E had a bit of an Aye Aye Aye with Prospect management, I did what I could to aid and went next door to Flat Iron. Few PBRs and it was time to bail on the night. Ramble on eh? back to topic of post.
Time to do it Again, Nate Deezy, and I go pre-game down in River North with some kids. The Plan is to Meet Dan K and others at Elephant and Castle around 6 or so. Last night we went crazy, tonight its a "school night" so we plan on taking it easy. I brought my nice Nikon and am going to try to capture some nice photos since we are down in front tonight.
Nate is a newbie, hes never heard any MMJ songs, what a way to get to know a band. Time to get to the guts of this tale. Leave buddy's apt. We'll see them later at the show, head to E&C, few pops, some nachos, and into the show we go. I wasn't worried about my camera or anything because the night before I saw all kinds of kids snapping photos, and flashes goin' off all over. I walk in with ticket in hand and big Oo camera hanging around my neck. Security doesn't let me get far and begins asking questions about the camera and telling me I have to check it, that I can not bring it in to the show. A little annoyed now I check it at the coat check and go get a drink. Im not happy, I could have brought my smaller camera and it would have been fine, I could have just held the camera under my hoody and I probably could have snuck it in. Now I have to burden of being out with this camera all night if we go out after (yes I know we said we'd take it easy tonight) and I don't even get any pictures out of it. Miffed we go to our seats.
Shortly thereafter the show begins, and I am pleasantly surprised they open with "At Dawn" instead of the expected "Evil Urges". 3 songs in though I can't get over that they took my camera because it had a removable lense. In a huff I storm out of the show and walk straight over to coat check. I give them my ticket and say,
"Give me my camera"
"Sir, are you leaving?" they ask.
"Yes, this show bores me," I say.
I receive my camera, tuck it under my hoody, walk towards the exit with a peripheral eye on security, and when backs are turned I button hook roll and quickly walk back in. No stopping, no eye contact, left leg, right leg, I know if i get into the show and past the usher thats it I'll make it. Once inside the show I'll be lost in the crowd. You'd think I was smuggling drugs or a weapon...no just a guy trying to take a few nice pictures.
I made it. Back at my seat everyone cheers that I was successful. I take back anything I ever said about not learning anything at public school. Great show and got some great shots, I think 400+, probably only 50 or so really worthwhile but thats the way it goes. Oh and those guys put on another spectacular show. Rocked! and as for making it an early night because Dan had work and I had an early flight...well it was a good goal, our high from the show got the best of us. Went to an after party and then closed the bars. NYC here I come!
