Monday Reading (Animal Collective, Steve Earle, Grizzly Bear, White Stripes, and more!)

It was a busy weekend. Settle in with some reading material to get you caught up on what you've missed and what's happening on the interwebs and beyond.

Animal Collective (who we'll see in Aug.) have a show tonight, May 11th, in D.C. at the 9:30 Club. The show will be shown via webcast at NPR. Check out the details at NPR Music.

Steve Earle talks about the emotional difficulty in putting together his tribute album to his idol, Townes Van Zandt, Townes, which will be released Tuesday May 12th. Read the full article from the NY Times.

The New Yorker must know that I'm going to see Grizzly Bear on my birthday in a few weeks because they featured the band in their recent issue. Have a read of the article yourself and keep an eye out for the band's upcoming release of Vecktimest.

Jack White assured White Stripes fans everywhere in his recent interview with Music Radar that despite his many side projects and Meg White's anxiety problems the White Stripes would be putting out new material, "It won’t be too far off, maybe a year.” The full interview can be found at Music Radar.

I stumbled on this article last week about an ex-banker that has turned the current economic downturn into an opportunity to leave behind his past work and focus on what was formerly just a hobby, building aluminum guitars. It's a cool story and aside from these geeetars looking pretty rad some of our favorite rockers seem to have taken a liking to them as well (yim yames???). Have a read at the Oregonian.

Cat Power cooks? I guess she does. I'm not sure it makes for the most compelling viewing, but I thought I'd let you guys decide. Check out past RHOTW Cat Power making some sweet potato somethings.

This is a pretty cool project that Logan Walters has undertaken. He has set out to redesign Wu-Tang Clan album covers as if they had been put out on Blue Note Records. Some interesting work. Have a look at the Wu-Tang Design Remix.

Happy reading and have a good week. -JL

Preview of Steve Earle's Tribute Album, "Townes"

Steve Earle is set to release his album of Townes Van Zandt songs this May 12th. He tells Rolling Stone he's been meaning to do just that for years as a tribute to his friend and mentor. I am eagerly looking forward to hearing the entire disc as Earle is in the unique position of having learned the songs by watching and playing them with TVZ himself. To Live's To Fly is one of the most moving tunes I've ever heard and while I still might prefer Townes' original, it is cool to hear the guy that named his son after the TVZ do his own version. Have a listen and get yourself a pre-ordered copy of the album below.

We all got holes to fill
And them holes are all that's real
Some fall on you like a storm
Sometimes you dig your own
