All Points West 2009: Friday Prep/Planning

I'm only going to be in attendance Friday, so I'm gearing up to make it count. The scheduled set times make me think I'll be catching Heartless Bastards on the Bullet Stage and then settling in for the duration at the Blue Comet stage.

Anybody have any thoughts on Shearwater vs. Seasick Steve?

Will it be too much to run over to see Ra Ra Riot between Fleet Foxes and The National?

Do I try to catch some Pharcyde before Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

I'm interested to see what the crowd will be like for the Friday daytime sets. I imagine their size will be a deciding factor in how much moving around I'm doing. Looking forward to a good day though. Send along any must-see sets and any other recommendations from those that may have gone last year. I'll be sure to report back tomorrow.

The Dead Weather @ The Vic 7/29/09

The Dead Weather didn't dissapoint. Solid, solid group. As per usual went to Sheffield's for pre-show lubricant. Enjoyed a range of choice beers while waiting for Kz and Traci. Once again due to cool refreshments and good company we missed the Screaming Females open up. Luckily though I'm getting used to this new era of bands coming on stage on schedule and on time and we did arrive with plenty of time to plant our selves comfortably down front, stage left, by the bar. The Vic is a funny little place and I can't say the layout is at all logical. The place is a constant traffic cluster f*ck mainly due to oddly placed handrails throughout the joint. Once good, loud, down and dirty blues rock hits your ears though who cares right? The Dead Weather delivered just that. Allison had good energy and I was happy to see Jack White ditch the drums for a handful of songs to come up front and slam the axe. He deserves the spotlight. Don't have a setlist but they only have 1 album so thats basically what was played...love the Bobby Dylan cover, New Pony. I'll get pics up as soon as Kz emails me the pics...

Soundgarden: Way Back Then, Then, and Now

I was reading this Rolling Stone piece about Kim Thayil and Soundgarden recently. He's got some interesting things to say about the band, it's recent 3/4 reunion appearance w/ Tom Morello, and the sliver of a possibility of a reunion. More than anything though the article reminded me of how kick ass Soundgarden was in its heyday. Grab your flannel and take your self back to the grungy days of the late 80's/early 90's and enjoy a couple tracks.
The first, "Nothing To Say" was the B-Side to their first single, "Hunted Down" in 1987. The second you all probably know well as it it comes from their breakthrough album, Superunknown. Both are jams. Enjoy.

Rocker Hottie Of The Week - Patience Hodgson of The Grates

This week's (is this still a weekly feature?) Rocker Hottie of The Week goes to Patience Hodgson of the Australian trio, The Grates. The group and Patience in particular have become known for their enthusiastic live performances and the tendency to jump a lot during shows. They are just finishing up a three week residency at Piano's in NY. Go see the jumping enthusiasm for yourself. Or you cahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifn check out some more pictures below and a couple tracks from The Grates recent release, Teeth Lost, Hearts Won.

Rise Against w/ Rancid @ Roseland Ballroom, NYC 7/26/09 (Pics, Setlist)

Rise Against
Punks of all ages came out last night in NY to get down with Rancid and Rise Against at the Roseland Ballroom. This show was somewhat of a redo for me personally as I was at the Roseland in October to see Rise Against and didn't even make it through their set as I was punched in the face (by a girl) and booted from the show. Last night I was able to make it through the entire night without any such drama. The crowd wasn't lacking in intensity though. From Rancid's first power chord it was a sweaty mess on the floor. Enjoy the pictures. Go get Rancid's new album Let the Dominoes Fall and be sure to check out Rise Against playing a hometown crowd at Lollapalooza.
