Quite a finish to MMJ's five night run at Terminal 5 in New York. The band played an inspired set of their tunes from Evil Urges. They capped the night with some good time covers and came back out for one my round of OBH. Glad I had the chance to get to NYC for this one.

The Dead Weather played tonight 7/16/09 at Terminal 5 in New York with the Screaming Females opening up. The bands delivered two plus hours of rocking goodness for the sold out crowd in attendance. I'm much too tired to put much together here in the way of words so take in the pictures from the show. The Dead Weather did not disappoint.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not a huge Bloc Party fan or even much of a fan at all, but when I got the invite to go to the show tonight I figured it'd be worth checking out. I had received Bloc Party's most recent release, Intimacy last fall. I had to get it off my ipod (maybe prematurely) after running into that "Mercury in Retrograde" song one too many times on shuffle. So I have to say I never gave the album a fair listen. I might have to go back to that one. These guys played an energetic show to an all ages crowd tonight at Terminal 5 and while I wondered at points if I'd ever been encouraged more often to clap at a show, overall I had a good time. Bloc Party can get it going at times. I definitely preferred their up tempo tunes, particularly those with lead singer Kele Okereke keeping a guitar in his hands. I can appreciate his enthusiasm for the performance but at times the stage banter seemed to be a bit much. I'll give him credit for the crowd surfing he did and as I said it was a fun show overall. I'll have to dig back into Bloc Party's Intimacy and give these guys another look. Anybody else go to the show? Seen these guys live? Or have an opinion on their work? I'd be interested to hear other opinions.
In celebration of Texas' Independence Day Trev and I made our way to Terminal 5 to see Charlie Robison, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and headliner Robert Earl Keen. We got a bit of a slow start after Trev first forgot his ticket and then couldn't find it. We missed Ray Wylie Hubbard but got more than our share of Texas tunage. We arrived in the middle of Charlie Robison's set and got to hear him play his crowd favorite, "My Hometown" after it was requested at every break and he had to repeatedly remind the crowd that he would play it. We heard a few of his other tunes and I would say that he is one that I will have to check out further. After his performance it was Cross Canadian Ragweed to take the stage. I'd seen them open before for Robert Earl Keen. They're a solid band but something seems to be lacking...and as Trev pointed out, their lead singer looks a little too much like Scott Stapp from Creed to take seriously. They were OK. At about 10:30 REK took the stage. As a crowd we were treated to some old favorites, a Townes Van Zandt cover, kick ass guitar from Rich Brotherton and Marty Muse, and the presence of the man...Mr. Robert Keen. It was a very solid show highlighted by a variation on my personal favorite Corpus Christi Bay (they seemed to play it a little faster than recorded) and the cover of TVZ's "Flying Shoes". They capped it all off by bringing out Cross Canadian Ragweed for the encore performance of "The Road Goes On Forever". It was a good show, but I have to say this was the first time that I really noticed how bad the sound can be at Terminal 5. I'm not sure if it was just how close I was to the stage, but the sound quality was subpar. This combined with the fact that the crowd in our vicinity was a weird mix of over 50 swinger types and doofus Texas frat boys made for a less than awesome overall experience. At one point I thought Trev was going to speedbag the drunk d-bag that was bumping into him. This was only bested when the guy standing near me who was 50+ and grinding all over his lady friend took off his shirt for the encore. I don't need to see this guy's hairy back ever, least of all in close quarters at a concert. I guess that comes with the Texas Independence Day celebration theme.

I feel like "I'm Coming Home" and "For Love" were in there too, but it is what it is. Anybody else remember?
Had the chance to catch The Black Keys last night at Terminal 5 in New York. It was the second of two sold out shows they played there this weekend and the band did not disappoint. For a two man band these guys get after it. They've come a long way from their days working on a landscaping crew together. Continue reading for some more pics of the show and of The Heartless Bastards, who opened (sadly we missed Lucero who also performed).
The Heartless Bastards (above). I had never heard these guys before but they were solid and got the crowd good and worked up before the Keys came on. I like that female lead. Impressive pipes on her.
I haven't been able to track down a setlist, but I remember Strange Times, Psychotic Girl, and my favorite, I Got Mine. Anybody remember others or have a full setlist?
