Rocker Hottie(s) Of The Week - Katzenjammer

With the Bonnaroo hangover in the air and paying tribute to our Norwegian roots this week's Rocker Hotties of the Week are the ladies of Katzenjammer. The band consists of Soleig Heila, Anne Marit Bergheim, Turid Jorgensen and Marianne Sveen—an between them they play the tuba, the balaika bass, drums, harmonica, piano, banjo, accordion, mandolin, guitar, melodica and, very efficiently, the aforementioned trumpet. They played the David Byrne curated stage this weekend at Bonnaroo and picked up a Norwegian Grammy somewhere along the way. Have a look. Have a listen.

Sunday 6/14/09 Bonnaroo Phish w/ The Boss

I was curious to see how Phish would handle the Sunday night slot after playing Friday. Sunday is an altogether different beast as most everyone is winding down from four days of a lotta bouncing around the room.
They played a decidedly more noodle friendly set, but the highlight had to be the band bringing the Boss on stage for 'Mustang Sally', 'Bobby Jean', and 'Glory Days'. GLORY DAYS? A proud day for the state of New Jersey.

Beastie Boys To Reissue 1992's 'Check Your Head'

Is your name Michael Diamond? Naw. Mine's Clarence.

When I was in junior high all I really wanted was to be was a Beastie Boy. Nothing wrong with wanting to be a white jewish rapper from Brooklyn (MCA was always my favorite) right? All of a sudden this year the "Three MC's and One DJ" are back in the news. They already did the reissue of 1989's sample-heavy classic 'Paul's Boutique', they're set to headline at Bonnaroo, are rumored to be on the bill for Lollapalooza, and are reported to be releasing a new album this year.
In keeping up with what is becoming a busy year for the Beastie Boys they will be reissuing 1992's 'Check Your Head' in digital form March 30th with the hard copy coming out April 7th. The reissue will feature bonus tracks along with other Beastie bells and whistles.
Take a trip down memory lane and go catch the Beasties' performance on Arsenio Hall (woop, woop) with DJ Hurricane and B Real from Cypress Hill.
Aiiiiight.

Bonnaroo 2009

Just as I was planning on not attending BROO this year, I look at the lineup and can't believe it. Im left stewing with a feeling I financially should take this year off along with the feeling of how could I possibly miss this.

Obviously Phish at the Roo is epic, but thats not even what I am excited about, I get them 2 nights in a row @ Alpine Valley, a place, in my mind, that is the best place Ive seen a show. Probably more so because it was the first place I went to a concert more so than the quality of the venue.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela? Robert Earl Keen? Merle Haggard, Andrew Bird, Band of Horses, Alberta Cross?
Im more excited for these than any of the main stage, larger, acts.
It goes on and on, Delta Spirit, Santogold, MGMT, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ting Tings...
Its worth it alone for Wilco ticket whos tix for show in Chicago are going for an unbelievable $100 a pop.

Who are you excited for? Lots of acts here I haven't heard as well, sure they're good, any I should check out?
Im curious what E has to add.

Bonnaroo 2006 - Saturday: Radiohead

We had some requests for videos, so here we go. Here's one from Radiohead's 2006 performance at Bonnaroo of Karma Police. We were there. Nowhere near this close to the stage. I'm not a huge Radiohead fan and I wasn't blown away by their performance, but it was pretty cool to see them with 80,000 other people...and to stay up past 9PM.

Bonaroo 2006 - Radiohead Cont.

The crowd for Radiohead was pretty impressive and apparently cell phones serve as the new lighters for the slow jams. Needless to say our view of the crowd was much better than our view of he band. We were deep.

The night itself was pretty uneventful. We were trying to be disciplined in our partying after the day before but Young Jeezy found his usual sleeping spot...

Notice the open jar of peanut butter nearby. Good night sweet prince.

Bonnaroo 2006 - Getting There

Wild Bill and I got a late start on our travels to Manchester, TN in 2006. This would prove to be not the only rookie mistake we would make on our first trip to Bonnaroo.

Due to some work related issues (namely my having to work until 10 PM the Thursday before B-Roo) we hit the road late. We pulled out of Chicago a little before 11 PM Thursday night determined to be ready for Shooter Jennings come early afternoon Friday. That meant we had some serious driving to do. With the Saturn in high gear we cruised through Indiana and into Kentucky in the early hours of Friday morning. With the sun coming up over the hills near Mammoth Cave we decided to try to get a little shut-eye at a rest stop before the sun came all the way up and it'd be too hot to sleep. (See above photo) We slept for maybe 2 hours before the heat was too much.

Aside from getting a late start we also still needed to get some last minute, but vital supplies (namely tobacco and alcohol). We pulled into some shady little spot in TN and got what we thought would get us started.

Excitement running high, our late arrival did allow us to avoid much of the traffic into the parking lot. However, at the initial checkpoint when we pulled in we ran made our next rookie mistake. When entering the lot the parking attendants give a rough search of the cars. We knew (or thought) we didn't have anything illegal in the
car. They asked us if we had any bottles in our cooler. To which we casually answered, Yeah. The guy gave us a confused look and informed us that glass bottles were not allowed. We honestly had no idea. All our beer was bottled. The guy asked to see our cooler. When he saw that all we had was bottles (and domestics at that) he chuckled and said, "It's only Miller Lite. Go ahead." Disaster averted. We were there.

Bonnaroo 2006 - Too Much Too Soon

After our hard traveling ways we set up our very weak and very minimalist camp. It was early afternoon, blazing hot, and we were ready to get in the mix. We hit it pretty hard right out of the gate.

Probably hit it too hard. We bounced around getting a feel for the layout of the stages and caught Donovan Frankenreiter, Steel Pulse, Bright Eyes, and watched Mike Gordon & Ramble Dove so a pretty kick ass cover of Jackson. After about 5 hours of drinking and concert going in the Tennessee sun we decided to head back to camp to eat some dinner and have a few beers that weren't $5 a pop. This would prove a fateful decision and another rookie mistake. Oysterhead was just coming on as we walked back to our car.

We settled in back at camp to a few cold beers and some snacks. We forgot a knife which made our PB&J sandwiches a little more difficult make. Wild Bill got creative on it and used the inner seal of the peanut butter jar folded up to spread the condiments. We enjoyed our sandwiches and our miller lites while we sat in our crazy creeks and watched the sun go down. It was starting to get dark. We discussed going back in. Tom Petty was coming up and we knew we had My Morning Jacket coming late night. But those crazy creeks were soooo comfortable.

One more beer. We'll go in 20 minutes. Famous last words.

I awoke still in my tipped over chair. I tried to wake the young one there, but it was no use. We were both spent. As much as it pains me, knowing that we missed My Morning Jacket and all of Friday night really, we had nothing left. The lack of sleep Thursday and hard partying ways Friday took it all out of us. I retreated to the tent. I did hear a distant "One Big Holiday" from the distance that night, but there was no moving for either of us that night. We missed an epic night, but learned an important Bonnaroo lesson; it's a marathon not a sprint. We'd live to see better days.

Bonnaroo 2006 - Day 2 We Find Our Legs...

...and a naked guy painted red. I think this was going on during Cypress Hill. Fitting right? I dunno.
