Sad news for all us White Stripes fans, but not altogether surprising. Today it is official; The White Stripes are no more. The band released the following statement:

“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

Kind of a cool way to go out. My memories of the '03 Aragon show will last forever. Great show. My only regret is that it was be the only time I saw The White Stripes live.

I'd hit a number of roadblocks in achieving this, but today I finally got a postable recording of the show. It's not without its hiccups and listening to one's self can be somewhat disturbing (Is that REALLY what I sound like?) but anyway stick with the recording of the full hour. Good Listens: Curtis Evans 'Life With The Buffalo'

We always love new music here at HGH. Sometimes it takes us awhile to find time to digest new material. I have to admit it has taken me some time to sit down and listen to this album, but I was intrigued by the fact that Curtis Evans is a hometown Chicago product and his full length debut, Life With The Buffalo, was released on Grape Juice Records just days before my birthday last year...and the fact that The Chicago Reader described Evans as "frighteningly talented...like if Hank Williams had tried a little of what Nick Cave's been drinking." That was enough to get me interested.

...And the album doesn't disappoint. Check it out yourself. I have a couple tracks here to sample and you can listen to the full album over at Curtis' bandcamp page. Evans also has recorded a Daytrotter session. Be sure to keep an eye for it. Happy listening and let me know what you think.

This has been a Friday feature, but I work Saturdays now. So does Riley. The significance of Friday has been diminished for us. We would still like to share some music though and Friday or Saturday, work or not, as R. Kells says, "it's the freakin' weekend."

Big week upcoming for My Morning Jacket with their performance of each of their albums in their entirety in a five night run at Terminal 5 in New York. I'm looking forward to hearing about those shows (maybe getting down for the Evil Urges performance?). This past week MMJ performed at Ed Sullivan Theater as part of their 10/12 appearance on the Late Show w/ David Letterman. Head over to The Steam Engine to download the entire performance. We've been relatively quiet for awhile now at Happy Genius Heroes. We had some tech hangups, some extended travel, and some general life changes of the contributors that made this whole thing tougher to keep going.

Things have settled down some and we're ready (I think) to get some action going here again.

The biggest recent development is that we have a radio show now. Pretty cool, right? Yesterday saw the debut of Happy Genius Heroes Radio on WBSL 91.7 in Western Massachusetts and streaming live on the internet HERE.

The show will run from 7-8am EDT every Thursday. We'll be playing all kinds of music. If you read this blog even a little you have an idea of the type of stuff you can expect to hear. So tune in, check it out. Send us a note if you'd like to hear something or you have any suggestions.

A little late I know. Better late than never? Fun show. Ran into A LOT of familiar faces. Some good extended jams on some of the more familiar tunes (Gideon). We got to here a song from Carl's new solo album and a new tune that MMJ has been playing lately, 'Circuital'.

Always good times with these guys. Riley went on to see them again 8/29 in Pittsburgh. I dunno if any a/v materials made it from that show, but here's a couple more decent pics from Chicago.

Delta Spirit @ Metro, Chicago, IL 6/19/10

We've been to a lot of shows in the past 16 months or so since the inception of this blog. Delta Spirit was one of our earliest reviews after Riley saw them at Double Door last Feb. and I saw them at Bowery Ballroom a week later. Their debut album Ode To Sunshine has been in heavy rotation for much of that time. It was truly a treat to see them perform a little over a year later in support of their latest release, History From Below.

The Romany Rye opened the evening with an impressive set that I'm certain had the lucky folks at Metro early enough to catch them saying, "I need to get those guy's album." I know I said it. Hometown favorite Ezra Furman and The Harpoons took the stage next for a high energy set that got the crowd ready for the main attraction.

It was about 10pm when Delta Spirit took the stage and opened with a little 'People Turn Around' teaser. Their performance was awesome. They mixed tracks from their new album with favorites from the old and while I admit I don't have the new one I was impressed with those tunes. Sophomore efforts can be tough but it appears that Delta Spirit has matched their debut LP in terms of consistent song quality.

Lead singer, Matt Vasquez led the energetic crowd through a solid showing of jams fast and slow. Despite the bands' constant touring and recent success you get a sense that these guys are truly appreciative of the fan support...and Chicago gave them a healthy dose. The band and the crowd fed off each other's energy and it made for a memorable show. One of the best concerts I've seen in awhile. Vasquez went so far as to meet fans in the Metro lobby as they exited the building. Great to see that after such a fun show. Now I gotta go get that new album...

Joe Ely @ Fitgerald's, Berwyn, IL 6/17/10

There's not a whole lot that can get me to make the trip out to Berwyn, but the with two very enjoyable evenings under my belt at Fitzgerald's in the past few months (this one and The Radiators show back in March) I'm beginning to appreciate this little gem of a venue just outside of Chicago's city limits.

Colin Gilmore opened up the evening playing a number of tunes from his soon to be released, Goodnight Lane. After his set the crowd continued to fill in for the night's headliner, Joe Ely.

Ely would be playing a solo set; just him and his guitar and the occasional harmonica. Having the chance to see him perform up close you got the sense that you were witnessing something special. Here was a guy who has played with everyone from The Clash to Bruce Springsteen and who has been on the road for thirty-plus years. He rattled off some of his hits from over the years; "Dallas", "Up On The Ridge", and "Me and Billy The Kid", all the while mixing in the occasion story or joke between songs. After all the years on tour you could tell Ely is right at home on stage with his guitar and a roomful of fans.

He played two encores to the enthusiastic Fitzgerald's crowd finishing with his clever little number "Gimme A Ride To Heaven" about picking up Jesus Christ as a hitchhiker and getting his car stolen in the process. When it was all over and I was headed back home the show left me with a mix of emotions. I had thoroughly enjoyed the performance, but was also left with a tinge of sadness as I wondered who will take up the role of the traveling troubadour when heroes like Joe Ely have passed? They just don't seem to make 'em like that anymore. I'm not sure I have an answer and I hope Ely has years of touring ahead of him, but it was a special treat to be in his presence for the evening.

And finally, maybe it's fitting to have the Brooklynite by way of Italy, Constanza, release what is the first song I've heard in response to the passing of Arizona's SB 1070. Much of the track is Costanza reading through the US D156 Immigration Form that legal immigrants must fill out. Costanza herself is a legal non-resident alien and she assures me she pays her taxes. In an email exchange through her publicist she expressed her desire to, "speak up on the issue, so that we can foster discussion and healthy democratic debate, regardless of which side of the debate we are on." That'd probably be good for all of us.

New Orleans Jazz Fest - Sunday 4/25/10

We crammed a lotta livin’ into 4 days in New Orleans. We also crammed a lotta good grub into our bellies in that time. Sunday was no exception as today we would eat two of our best meals of the trip.

It was a sloooow start getting things going on Sunday morning after the festivities of the night before. We didn’t make it out to breakfast until about 1 pm. We made the trek (totally worth it) to Elizabeth’s. It was a little bit of a wait for this ravenous bunch, but we did get to see the lead guitarist from Hootie & The Blowfish, Mark Bryan ride up on his bike and put his name on the list.

After the wait we were greeted by a menu that featured praline bacon and every dish seemed to have 2 poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on top.
It was exactly what our grease craving crew needed at that point.

Back on a full tank, we made our way back out to the Fair grounds for our Day 3 at Jazz Fest. Riley once again delivered with the Miller Lite Tent. This being even more important as it was legitimately HOT. We slow played a few Boggses in the shade and listened to Levon Helm, Marcia Ball, and The Allman Brothers. Eventually we had to brave the sun for at least the walk over to see baby faced Johnny Lang give it his all in the Blues Tent.

It was a laid back Sunday at the racetrack; as any day at the track should be. We met an enterprising gentleman offering rides in his truck. Some might be leery of an unlicensed taxi, but when we heard Benny Goodman on his radio we knew the guy was legit. We asked him to take us to Dookie’s for dinner, but he recommended a favorite place of his; Madina’s. As he dropped us of he said, ‘Get the etoufee.’

Our sketchy ride was just in time. We got the last table and then the place got slammed. We ate crawfish etoufee for days. It isn’t often I can’t finish my dinner, but this was one such occasion. Bellies stuffed we made our way back to downtown on the Canal St. streetcar. Our trip to New Orleans was winding to a close. Satisfied.

New Orleans Jazz Fest - Saturday 4/24/10 & George Porter @ d.b.a.

As we continue our recounting of our experience in New Orleans for the Jazz and Heritage festival’s first weekend I need to make a note that both Friday and Saturday we received our pre festival sustenance at Mother’s Restaurant. Friday it was one of these:

The Ferdi Special Po Boy. Saturday it was a crawfish omelet. It was all kinds of good both days and served as a good base for the festivities each time.

Saturday in a lot of ways was all about the My Morning Jacket setfor us. It was also however about Riley coming through with a great hook up…and it did finally stop raining.

After raining all day Friday it started off cloudy out at the racetrack, but was soon a hot one. Thankfully while we watched Cowboy Mouth in the early afternoon we found our way to the Miller Lite tent. The Kid had done his legwork. He had a name. She remembered him and the 4 members of our party were admitted to the Miller Lite tent. We were out of the sun. We could sit and rest a minute. We could watch a live feed and listen to the different stages…oh and we each could have 4 free adult beverages. BUCKEYE RILEY!

We watched The Funky Meters and some Better Than Ezra and enjoyed the shade and cold drinks before the big MMJ show. #1 Star of the Weekend to Riley for that pull alone (he also hooked up the hotel and the plane tickets, so he is officially THE MAN).

After a great day at the festival we were in for a big Saturday. After the requisite grub was consumed we met up with our bud LEB and friends for a little soiree. She has some great pictures of the festival. Be sure to check em out here, here, here, and here.

About midnight folks started to disperse to their selected live music venue of choice for the night. We made our way to d.b.a. to see George Porter Jr. and The Runnin’ Pardners. We had seen/heard Porter earlier in the day perform with The Funky Meters. Good times to see him in a more intimate environment. We met some cool people there and sure enough in the wee hours of the morning our old friend Maurice Brown made an appearance onstage to join Porter and his band.

After a few short days we came to realize that’s kind of how New Orleans works; you never know who you’ll run into or where you’ll end up, but odds are there’s a familiar and friendly face around the corner sometime soon.

New Orleans Jazz Fest - Friday 4/23/10 Ramblings

Is it too late to include a few final ramblings on the trip to New Orleans for jazz fest? We’ve already been over the culinary delights of Thursday and that night’s festivities at Vaughan’s with Kermit & Co. We ran you through the 90 minutes of My Morning Jacket that we saw on Saturday. What about the rest of the weekend? We saw lots of other music too and some of it was pretty keeeck ace. Let’s see if we can remember the rest of the weekend here.

Friday April 23rd was a wet one. We arrived at the grounds in our $1 SoCo ponchos (best purchase of the weekend?) in the midst of a serious rainstorm. Anything exposed was immediately soaked and footwear was a muddy mess. We watched New Orleans’ own Jon Cleary bang away in the rain on the piano at the Gentilly Stage. The crowd seemed sparse for the whole day as many people probably decided to wait for better weather, but the people that made it out in the elements were giving it their all. Feet may have been dampened, but spirits were not as fans danced and twirled carelessly in the mud.

After Jon Cleary we made our way to the other end of the grounds to the Acura Stage where we were drawn in by Deacon John doing a cover of Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross”. I love that tune. We stayed a minute, but he finished his set shortly thereafter and we decided to retreat to the Jazz Tent for a break from the rain and to see the Chicago born trumpet player Maurice Brown. We had seen him play the night before when he joined Kermit at Vaughan’s. The Jazz tent on Friday was decidedly more subdued in its appreciation of the playing, but it was appreciative nonetheless. We would find ourselves humming Brown’s tune, “Holy Cow” for much of the rest of the weekend.

A little drier and recharged after sitting for the Maurice Brown performance we made our way back into the rain and watched a little of the Semolian Warriors in their Mardi Gras Indian outfits.

We scooted by George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic for a minute and continued down to watch the Lost Bayou Ramblers at the Fais Do-Do Stage. That was a fun band to watch…some good Cajun music.

From there it was on to catch a few songs from The Black Crowes. Kinda refreshing to hear some rock and roll. We saw them play “Jealous Again” and then decided we better get up to see Lionel Richie or we’d regret it.

We made the muddy trek back up to the Acura Stage again to catch the last hour or so of Lionel Richie. He killed it. The guy played one jam after another; “Hello”, “Dancing On The Ceiling”, “Three Times A Lady”, etc. He reminded the crowd often, “oh, we got songs…” I remain impressed with his stage presence and entertainer chops. He was awesome. I didn’t even realize I knew that many Lionel Richie songs, but every one was a jam. He tapped into The Commodores catalogue and played “Brick House”. By the time he came out for an encore performance of “All Night Long” nobody cared that it was rainy and muddy.

Well, my friends the time has come,
Raise the roof and have some fun.
Throw a-way de work to be done,
Let the music play on…

My Morning Jacket @ New Orleans Jazz Fest 4/24/10

This was it. This was the show that got us to New Orleans. 90 minutes of live MMJ. We'd been waiting since the MSG New Year's show to see these guys in concert again. It didn't matter that Simon and Garfunkel were on the other main stage. I can get down with some 'Cecilia' and all that, but no way were we going to miss any of this performance.

We made sure we all used the restroom one final time. We stocked up on beverages. Then at about 4:45 we made our way toward the stage to set up shop. We managed to lay claim to a good dry spot near the mud pool that had been created in the front and center area of the Gentilly Stage soundboard and we waited.
The anticipatory tension grew as the crowd did the same and when Jim, Tommy, Carl, and Patrick took the stage at 5:32 everyone was peaking.

The band went into a building early jam and then right into the familiar riff on their crowd favorite, "One Big Holiday". The place erupted.

With only a 90 minute time slot the band ripped through some of their most popular tunes; sticking to material from It Still Moves, Z, and Evil Urges.

It was a great time and good to see the band back on stage together. As time got to running short the Preservation Hall Jazz Band joined them on stage. Also joining in the fun was Al "Carnival Time" Johnson who didn't let Jim James be the only one rocking a cape on stage. Of course we wish they could've played longer, but it was a lot of fun and worth the trip to see them. Setlist, more pics, and a video below.

Central Grocery, The Praline Connection, and Kermit Ruffins @ Vaughan's Lounge 4/22/10

The HGH crew was in New Orleans this past weekend for the opening of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. It’s hard to say whether the food or the music was the #1 Star of this trip. Both were awesome. You’ll notice that most of our existence for the five days we were in town revolved entirely around those two things…and the occasional drink.

So it was on Thursday last week we arrived in New Orleans. While waiting for our room to be made up at the Hotel St. Marie we made our way to Central Grocery for a muffaletta.
The line was long but moved fast and in a short time span each of the three of us were sitting on the banks of the Mississippi river with said sandwich piled high with salami, ham, provolone, chopped olives, and oil, a bud tall boy, and a bag of Zapp’s craw-tator chips. Good livin’.

We slow played a few more beers, read our Jazz Festival editions of OffBeat Magazine, and tried to come up with a loose plan for the weekend. It being Thursday we decided our night should revolve around getting over to Vaughan’s to see Kermit Ruffins.

After dinner at The Praline Connection of catfish, crawfish etoufee, and stuffed bell peppers we arrived at Vaughan’s a little after 10pm.

The building at the corner of Dauphine and Lesseps streets is unmistakable as the spot. Crowds of people milled outside and into the street surrounding the run down building strewn with colored flags and lit up by neon signs. We paid our cover and made our way inside. It was as packed as you’d expect it to be the night before jazz fest starts, but it wasn’t impossible to get a beer and over time we were able to secure some real estate within close proximity to the stage. Riley even got a seat.

It didn’t take us long to see why Kermit does this show every week. It’s HIS night. He does what he wants. His friends come up to play with him. The ladies love him and between sets he sits and queues up tacks from his itunes to entertain the crowd. It’s a loose atmosphere with the only thing taken seriously is having a good time. Kermit’s drummer did a take on Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ with locally influenced lyrics, trumpet player Maurice Brown came up to show his chops, and the band poked some fun at Kermit’s recent work as an actor playing himself on HBO’s Treme by playing a teaser of the theme song to that show.

It was our first night in town and it might have been our most memorable. We put in 3 hours or so dancing with Kermit and friends. I dunno if we worked off that dinner, but we might’ve come close. It was a night in New Orleans as it should be. Good music. Good friends. Good fun.

Deer Tick w/ Those Darlins @ Bottom Lounge, Chicago, IL 4/8/10 (review, videos)

We don't play favorites here at HGH...well usually not, but our little buddy CL is constantly asking at every show, "Who's your favorite in the band?". As a concert goer you don't always have a lot to go on to answer the question. Does the stage banter strike you as genuine? Do you appreciate the yeoman-like workmanship of the supporting musicians? Are the drummers facial expressions striking you the wrong way? These are the types of questions you might use to decide...who IS your favorite in the band? Last night's Deer Tick show was no exception.

Our friend CL was all over it from the jump, "The bassist is my favorite." Well, we had a chance to chat with Chris after the show and snag a quick picture of him with his new #1 fan. There's early talk of a side project band Chris & Christine...we'll see how that works out. Honestly Chris seemed like a genuinely good dude. He wasn't the least bit thrown off when CL asked him if he was "...friends w/ his parents."

When Chris wasn't fielding questions about the familial support he may or may not receive he was holding down the bassline for the show. A little different this time on the bass guitar whereas last time through town he was on the upright bass. This wasn't the only change in the band's look as it seems like they were 1 guitarist short from last time they played in Chicago. This might have been Ian O'Neill from Titus Andronicus who played some dates with them in the fall. Anyway, he wasn't there this time. I wonder what effect that had on the show. I recall being impressed by the guy's playing.

Gravel voiced lead singer John MacCauley mentioned being really f-ed up last time in Chicago, so maybe that was the difference. Maybe it has to do with touring with your gal pal’s band, but things seemed kinda dialed down compared to what we’ve seen from each of these bands in the past. Despite a little lower energy level they were some memorable highlights from the show. The cover of Chuck Berry’s “Maybelline” was pretty cool; made even cooler with on-the-spot crowd member Josh Johnson being pulled on stage to play harmonica for the song. I always like the tune “Cake and Eggs”, good to see the Darlin/MacCauley couple duet that one.
In general though maybe it was just the fact that, as CL pointed out, the slower songs of the night were the stronger ones and this gave the show a distinctly more mellow feel as compared with the show in the fall. The band slowed it down on ‘Ashamed’. This had been a raucous crowd sing along and was now a crooner special. Are the guys growing up? Getting sober? Or soft? Maybe none of the above and it was just a little toned down from shows past. It was a good time nonetheless.

Passion Pit @ Congress Theater Chicago, IL 4/2/10 (setlist, videos)

After playing a free show at Logan Square Auditorium in the fall Passion Pit returned to Chicago to play to a sold out crowd at the Congress Theater. Lead singer, Michael Angelakos, made sure to thank the crowd for "making this the biggest show we've ever played." Pretty cool.

White Stripes New DVD Release, Under Great White Northern Lights

I just got back from a long trip outside the country. I brought some music, but not much. One thing I did bring was a recording of a White Stripes concert from 2007 that I didn't have a chance to get to in person. I found myself on buses and ferries in South America absolutely rocking out to this show. It reminded me of how much I enjoy the band's music and that while I enjoy The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, neither can replace the simplicity of the two piece Jack and Meg.

So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about this new DVD that was recently released, Under Great White Northern Lights.

First premiering last summer/fall this production has gained momentum as being a rock documentary of the 'can't miss' variety. Filmed on the band's Canadian 2007 tour this is really the last we've heard from the band since the 'break' that the White Stripes have been on ever since. They popped their heads up for Conan and there was talk of a new album, but for fans looking for something, anything even kinda fresh, there is this...and it's supposed to be good. How different will it be from their previously released, Under Blackpool Lights? I dunno, but I'm gonna watch it to find out.

In the spirit of 2007 White Stripes. Here are the first 4 songs they performed at their July 24th, 2007 show at Madison Square Garden.

MGMT New Album 'Congratulations' Leaks

MGMT's latest effort, Congratulations, has been leaked. The album was scheduled for release April 13th, but the interwebs couldn't wait. You can hear the album in its entirety at MGMT's website. A little searching and you could probably find the download as well (not that we condone that sort of thing).

After the '07 release of Oracular Spectacular and the subsequent 3 years that MGMT has spent to, "...make some music, make some money, find some models for wives," I wonder how sick of those tunes the band has become. Band member Ben Goldwasser assured us "There definitely isn't a 'Time To Pretend' or a 'Kids' on the album," in a Jan. interview w/ NME. Is that a good thing? Those WERE jams. Albeit entirely worn out these days, but we could use some replacements. Maybe it's too much to hope for a new summer anthem on this album, but can we agree that we don't fill that void with MGMT's summer anthems from '08? (yes, released in '07, but seems that it took 'til '08 to be impossible to avoid)

Flogging Molly @ The Aragon 3/13 (setlist) / Back From South America / Late St. Patrick's Day Ramblings

I'm kinda rusty at this blogging thing. I just returned from 10 weeks in Chile. Sorry for the slowdown in the action at HGH. Anybody's that's still around, we appreciate you hanging in. Lots to look forward to this spring. Riley has been getting things firing again. I have been a little gun shy since getting back, but I think I'm ready to go.

First concert back from 2+ months off...the obligatory St. Patrick's season Flogging Molly concert. Last year in New York. This year; Chicago style.

It always seems like a good way to celebrate the St. Patrick's Day season; bounce around to some of Dave King and Co.'s jams. The problem this year was that I'd burnt my candle to just about its limit prior to this show getting underway. It was a late night Friday out getting reacquainted with the goodness that is the J&M Tap and its jukebox. Then was awake way too early Saturday with way too many people in green shirts. Maybe I'm getting too old for this sh!te, but I had to bail early on this show. I made it through about 90 minutes and at that point decided my hurt was outweighing my fun. I had to leave after "Rebels Of The Sacred Heart".

Still got to see some of the Flogging Molly classics and personal favorite "The Worst Day Since Yesterday." Check the full setlist from the night below.

Jeff Tweedy @ Orpheum Theater Phoenix, AZ 12/27/09 (videos, setlist)

Riley and I had a chance to catch a rare Jeff Tweedy solo show while on our recent holiday travels to Phoenix. The Wilco frontman played an intimate set for a full house at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Phoenix.
It was impressive to see Tweedy do his best to fill in all the parts (as best he could) of his Wilco bandmates; we got a few whistled or hummed guitar solos. Tweedy seemed to be in good spirits with his wife and sister in the crowd and the intimate setting allowed for some good stage banter. At one point he forgot a verse of lyrics only to ask for help from the crowd and be put back on track.
It was a nice treat to see and hear some of Wilco mainstays and other tunes in a one man format. Such was the intimacy of the night that towards the end of the show Tweedy stepped away from the microphones and played a couple tunes sans PA.

So the videos are kinda dicey since they're from kinda far back, but the sound is pretty good.

I just couldn't resist posting this. The fact is R. Kelly is one of my favorite entertainers. Kells seriously puts out hit after hit after hit, singing about the best topics. Who would have ever thought someone would put out a song with these lyrics.

My Morning Jacket to play New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest

Looks like we're headed to the BIG EASY!

A friend just tipped me off to this, My Morning Jacket is playing the first weekend of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest. Holy Cow! Didn't take much to get us to pull the trigger on this one. Seeing as Lionel Ritchie will be performing we're all hoping Jim James and him team up to perform 'Easy' or 'All Night Long'. Oh yeh, Pearl Jam will be there weekend #2. Dr. Dog @ Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Fest (Pictures)

The crowd quickly shifted as Béla Fleck and the Flecktones finished and people got ready for Dr. Dog. It became much younger and much thinner crowd, not to say I was shocked but I thought more people would have stuck around. Unfortunately it became clear that majority of people were only there at all for the Flecktones. Too bad cuz Dr. Dog is a solid band. They put on a solid set despite the slowly dwindling crowd. It was a long 13 hour day, check out these pics of Dr. Dog bringin' it home for us.

Béla Fleck and The Flecktones @ Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Fest (Pictures)

Béla Fleck and The Flecktones played an unreal set fiiled with all kinds of holiday jams. They mixed in songs like Jingle Bells, Charlie Brown Theme, Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, and even performed an epic version of the 12 Days of Christmas. As if we didn't these guys were sick enough they had to flex their skills by playing each verse of 12 Days, not just in a different key but also in a different time signature. The result was unbelievable. I'll might have to write more later, but for now enjoy more pictures below.

Rocker Hottie Of The Week: Nora Kirkpatrick (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros)

This week's RHOTW was easy. While at Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros last Friday, Jim and I immediately knew who was getting our vote. We're both suckers for blondes, then throw in the fact she plays the accordion in one of our favorite new bands well how could we not pick her. Love the old squeeze box. Apparently this hottie is also an actress, check out her IMDB page...anyone ever seen that show Greek? I was a John From Cincinnati fan but don't remember her. Anyway I give you Nora Kirkpatrick:

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros w/ Fool's Gold and Local Natives @ Lincoln Hall, Chicago 11/27/09 (Videos & Review)

It was a night for bearded glee club indie rock at Lincoln Hall last night as there seemed to be at least eight bearded or mustachioed people on stage at all times. The bands did not disappoint what was a sold out LH crowd though as there were plenty of dance along tunes and band members seemingly in the crowd quite often. Fun night. Watch the videos and read some more about it below.

Sadly, we missed Local Natives as we had some ticketing issues that had us waiting for a friend who found himself dependent on the arrival of a very drunk underage stranger. Eventually we all got inside and had a chance to catch the tail end of Fool's Gold's set. Watch some video from their set. Keep an eye out for Riley in there cheering on the band's procession through the crowd.

At about 12:15 AM Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros took the stage and opened with 'Janglin' (I think). From there the band took us through a little over an hour of much of their debut album. There were a couple moments when frontman Alex Ebert seemed seriously frustrated with different sound elements but every time things seemed to be getting just a little too tense, his female counterpart Jade Castrinos would bring things back with her giant smile and vocals to match. "Home" was awesome. As was "40 Day Dream"...F, the whole show was a good time.

Go see these guys if and when you get a chance and if you haven't been to a show at Lincoln Hall (this was my first), do so. It's a solid little venue; a welcome addition to the CHI music scene.

GIVING THANKS: "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"

For Thanksgiving this week I thought I'd give a shout out to a song or an artist I was thankful for. After hours of debating, I settled on the song Knocking on Heaven's Door. It was originally written by Bob Dylan for Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (song begins about 1:30)

A favorite of mine and so many, its no wonder this jam is covered by basically every artist on the globe. Theres a version of this song for everyone and you could literally spend days on youtube listening to renditions. I mean...I have seen Ghostland Observatory before and have had a great time, but I'd heard horror stories of the crowd at Congress Theatre being young and well...young. and I guess they were, but the crowd was fun and enthusiastic. I didn't stick around for Deadmau5, but the Ghostland set was everything I'd hoped for. They played about an hour and with a sold out Congress I danced it up with the 17 and over crowd.
Very cool venue and after seeing these guys at All Points West this past summer play to a pretty sparse gathering (they were up against Coldplay and MGMT) it was cool to see them play a packed house. Enjoy a couple vids from the night. The laser and light show continue to impress. Go see these guys when you get a chance.
